After four months of shooting with the Olympus 17mm f1.8 I can say that it has quickly become one of my favorite lenses and focal lengths to shoot with. I left my Canon system for dead in July and changed to the wonderful world of mirrorless cameras with Olympus. I wanted a sharp, versatile but also budget friendly lens so I bought the 17mm f1.8 (full frame equiv. 34mm). I was really surprised that I went with a prime lens because all of my previous lenses had been zooms because they offered me all the things I was looking for.
Surprisingly though this lens has allowed me to do everything from action, landscape, street, automotive, and I’m sure the list will continue. It’s really small and leight form factor makes it easy to bring with me everywhere I go and I hardly need to bring a bag with me because the whole set up can fit in the center console of my car. It is a great lens for street photography because it is this cute little lens that people don’t see as threatening or overly professional. Also when you’re out in the woods or by the ocean getting those landscape shots you can turn around and get some near macro shots with the close focusing distance and shallow depth of field.

Overall this lens lends itself to shoot near any situation with it’s somewhat wide angle and low aperture. This lens will be living on my camera and in my line-up for a very long time. If you are getting into the Olympus Micro Four Thirds system and want to take advantage of all of its benefits I would highly recommend getting this lens. Also if you have never shot with a prime lens before this is a great one to start with.
