Canon recently introduced a new EF-S 35mm f/2.8 IS STM Macro lens with a built-in LED ring light. The lens is built for the crop sensor body styles in the Canon DSLR line up, and it is an equivalent 56mm focal length. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 3 cm (1.2 in.) and uses Canon’s IS system to reduce shake by four stops. The STM motor also allows for a silent focus for all the video shooters out there. The built in LED light uses the power of the camera to turn on and it has two brightness levels (half and full power). Priced at $349.99

Using Canon’s new Rebel T7i in the store, we took a few sample shots of our Groot figure that stands at 1 1/2 inches and boy does he look huge in these images! The light creates a soft glow on the subject being photographed and in some cases can create a nice ring catch light on reflective surfaces. The LED light separates Groot from the background when it illuminates his face. Perfect for the macro lovers who want to add a little extra pop to their images. Let us know if you see the difference!

Thanks for the demo of this new lens. I am not that sold on the results though. The working distance for a 35mm lens at 1:1 would mean you are almost on top of the subject. I guess it wouldn’t be too bad for inanimate subjects. i also think the ring lighting flattens the subject too much. It also places a strong glossy highlight on the surface of smooth subject from the sample you have here. it wouldn’t work well for a great many invertebrates or herps. The glare would be an issue with the surfaces of many leaves as well.
Thank you again for providing us with helpful information.

I feel this lens is really for a more fun use. I wouldn’t recommend it for professional studio shooting. But thank you for your input!
