Since 2022 has come to a close, we figured that we would look back at the 10 most popular cameras for the year based on the number sold. Without further ado…

Despite not coming out until the end of July 2022, the Canon EOS R10 was the 10th most popular camera at Action Camera in 2022. This camera is fantastic for those who are looking to move to their first mirrorless camera or want to make the leap from using their cellphone.

8. Olympus TG-6

With all of the natural beauty surrounding us here in Northern California and Northern Nevada, it’s no surprise that the TG-6 was one of the most popular cameras at Action Camera in 2022. With the ability to go 50ft underwater and being both drop resistant and able to operate in freezing conditions while giving outstanding images (it even allows for shooting in RAW!), this camera can always be with you.

From Olympus’s website: “You live for the outdoors. Hiking steep mountain trails. Backpacking through a desert canyon. Skiing in the wilderness. The Tough TG-6 is ready for adventure. It just keeps on shooting awesome stills and video. Packed with pro features, you’ll nail difficult shots — even in low light. Shoot intricately detailed macro photos and unique shots underwater with vivid color. The lightweight, compact Tough TG-6. Engineered to survive the world’s toughest places.”

7. Nikon Z9

It’s crazy to think that a top-of-the-line flagship camera was one of the most popular cameras of 2022, but that just shows how anticipated and talked about the Nikon Z9 was. This was the camera that made many of the last remaining DSLR shooters convert to mirrorless. Offering the world’s best AF scene detection system, best-in-class 8K video resolution and internal recording, the world’s fastest still image frame rate of 120 fps, and the world’s first truly blackout-free electronic viewfinder, there’s simply nothing that this camera can’t do. Combine all of the features that the Z9 offers with its pro build quality with dust, dirt, and moisture weather sealing and you get one of the best cameras possible.

6. Canon R7

Like the Canon R10, despite not coming out until halfway through the year (June), the Canon R7 was one of the most popular cameras of 2022. As one of the most advanced APS-C cameras currently vailable, the R7 gives you professional features in a more compact body.

From Canon’s website: “With a 15 FPS mechanical shutter, the high-performance EOS R7 is the most advanced APS-C camera from Canon. Featuring a high-speed shooting 32.5 MP sensor, in-body stabilization up to 7 stops with coordinated control IS, and 4K60p video, it offers maximum versatility for capturing photo and video of fast action, wildlife, and everything in between. The perfect all-around camera for dedicated professionals and advanced hobbyists alike.”

5. Canon T7

DSLRs may be going away, but like the character from Monty Python and The Holy Grail, the Canon T7 proclaimed, “I’m not dead!” and wound up being the 5th most popular camera of 2022 at Action Camera. For those who are on a budget and want to make a move into interchangeable lens cameras, this is a great option.

From Canon’s website: “Up your photography game with the EOS Rebel T7. Perfect for beginners, this camera bundle offers the essential tools you need to take your SLR skills to new heights — all in one convenient package. No matter where your next photography adventure takes you, count on the EOS Rebel T7’s impressive 24.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor and wide ISO range of 100-6400 (H:12800) to capture high-quality images, even in low-light  situations.”

4. Canon R5

The fact that this is the oldest (available from the end of July 2020) mirrorless interchangeable lens camera on this list and it was still the 4th most popular camera of 2022 is a testament to just how amazing the Canon R5 truly is. As Canon’s highest-resolution camera, the R5 is great for capturing amazing detail, while still offering fast autofocus and incredible video (8k!).

From Canon’s website: “Canon’s all-new 45 Megapixel full-frame sensor is at the heart of the EOS R5’s superb image quality, which also leads the way for impressive 8K DCI cinematic movie capture with the ability to extract 35.4 Megapixel still images. Focus and speed are paramount in the EOS R5, providing impressive continuous capture at speeds of up to 20 frames-per-second and with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II capability, to track split second movements of even the most elusive of subjects. With 1,053 Automatic AF zones, it is easier than ever to photograph people with the use of Eye, Face and Head Detection AF, or intuitively track the whole body, face or eye of cats, dogs, or birds with Animal Detection*2 AF. The 5-axis in-body image stabilization can effectively compensate for camera shake with approximately 8 stops of stabilization* with use of certain non-stabilized, and optically image stabilized lenses. Connectivity like 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth®, is also included.”

If you are a wedding or portrait photographer, are looking for a high-end travel camera, or simply are someone who wants a camera that will give you great results no matter the situation, the Z6 II is up to the task.

2. Canon R6

Sadly, this will probably be the last year that the Canon R6, the top-selling Canon of 2022, will be on the list of our top sellers; the Canon R6 Mark II arrived at the end of November this year and will be leading the way going forward. So what made the Canon R6 so popular? Canon came out with a jack-of-all-trades, creating a camera that excels for both photographers and video creators.

From Canon’s website: “Designed to meet the demands of both photographers and video content creators who want a strong and versatile camera to keep up with their active lives. It can go from photographing high-speed action sports to filming 4K cinematic video with ease thanks to its high-performance CMOS sensor and DIGIC X image processor.”

1. Sony A7 IV

The Sony A7 IV was the top-selling camera at Action Camera in 2022, and it wasn’t even close; more A7 IVs went out the door in 2022 then the next 2 cameras COMBINED. Whether you’re looking for image quality (33MP image sensor with 15 stops of dynamic range), speed (class-leading autofocus system), or video capabilities (4k 60P), the Sony A7 IV does it and does it at a high level. With all that you get from the Sony A7 IV, it wouldn’t be shocking to see it repeat as the top-selling camera at ActionCamera in 2023.

From Sony’s website: “With groundbreaking performance in both still and movie recording, the α7 IV is the ideal hybrid, providing breathtaking imagery along with on-the-spot delivery and distribution. The α7 IV is a camera designed to bring to life the artistic visions of today’s creators.”
